Man, 18, in Serious Condition After Crash at Palm Beach International Raceway

By Julius Whigham II, The Palm Beach Post

January 7, 2010

An 18-year-old man injured in a drag racing crash Wednesday night remains in serious condition, authorities said.

Casey Bicknell was injured after crashing his 2006 Chevrolet Corvette during an organized drag race at the Palm Beach International Raceway. He sustained a severe head injury and was flown via Trauma Hawk to St. Mary's Medical Center, a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office report said.

According to the report, Bicknell's car went beyond the racing area, through a gravel pit at the end of the racetrack and struck a stack of tires.

Bicknell's car was going 108.86 miles per hour at the end of the quarter-mile race, but it was uncertain how fast the car was moving when it entered the gravel pit, the report said.

The Jupiter man who was paired with Bicknell for the race said he saw no brake lights as the car entered the gravel pit.

Bicknell's parents, who were at the track at the time of the race, are from Stuart.

lets see how much better tech inspections get and how serious they get about helmets now.

You should be required to pay for and complete a training class before you drag race if you are under the age of 21.

yea the net is supported by a wall. wtf is an 18 year old kid doing driving a vette anyways? im sure he had a helmet on as well. if they let him through without a helmet they are asking for trouble. if his brakes gave out i think chevy has a lawsuit on their hands.

so i dont think he even hit the brakes ... as for the helmet... that could go up for debate. i have seen plenty of sub 13.99 sec cars go down the track with no helmet there. they let you do at least one run before they say anything to you about it.

and there is a safty net out at the end of the track... they work well on cars that are trying to stop. but this guy ended up past the gravel pit and on the other side of a ditch...

x10000 on that. no exceptions.

and if the kids dad could afford a corvette in sure he could afford a training course or to send the kid to one of them 3 day driving schools.

If the brakes went out pushing the pedal should still illuminate the brake lights even if the brakes dont engage. (Unless corvettes have some totally diff design). My guess is, tho i am not sure and hope not, he could have blacked out or something to cause him to not hit the brakes

there were all kinds of storys about mild heart attacks and blacking out.. but how would he keep the car straight?
the kid is 18... how out of shape could he be that he would have a stroke? most of the things people are saying im not beliving. im still thinking it comes down to him not knowing what he wad doing...but you never know.
